CHALLENGE

Inefficient resource allocation and poor data collection

The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) Sexual Health Service delivers confidential, free STI, HIV, and hepatitis care across remote communities. Serving 250,000 people over 142,900 sq. km, its teams handle about 75 patients daily, from First Nations peoples to backpackers. However, manual data collection through spreadsheets made tracking high-risk groups difficult and planning inefficient, limiting insight into how best to reach and support vulnerable populations.

APPROACH

Transforming care through collaboration and analytics

CHHHS began its digital transformation with Qlik Sense over five years ago to simplify healthcare data and improve workflows. Initially skeptical, Dr. Alister Keyser now champions Qlik, crediting collaboration between clinicians and digital experts for its success. Qlik captures key data such as demographics, risk factors, and conditions, revealing insights on vulnerable groups and improving outreach. Automated tracking has replaced manual entry, reducing errors and freeing staff to focus on patient care.

RESULTS

Reaching more patients with Qlik

With Qlik, CHHHS accesses accurate, real-time data to reach more patients and respond proactively across key travel routes. Improved analysis raised First Nations outreach from 9% to 13% in three months. Automated workflows replaced manual referrals, easing staff workload and speeding care. Teams now track prescriptions, monitor quality metrics, and analyze billing data. As a community-based service, CHHHS uses Qlik to demonstrate performance gains and deliver smarter, faster healthcare.
