CHALLENGE
A valuable chance to gain real-world experience
Lwam Teklay spent three years studying at the Mekelle Institute of Technology in Ethiopia, building skills that eventually led to an opportunity to study applied computer science at Thomas More University in Belgium. It was a great opportunity to complement her abilities with practical experience.
Teklay already had a good understanding of analytics and the presentation of insights, having developed her skills with Python and SQL. Thomas More’s work with the Qlik Academic Program allowed her to take those capabilities to new levels.

APPROACH
Combining theory with hands-on experience
Teklay’s Qlik journey began in the second year of her studies at Thomas More with a data visualization module based around the Qlik Academic Program. This involved combining Qlik’s learning materials with valuable hands-on experience.
The journey continued the following academic year when Teklay advanced to using Qlik as a complete business intelligence tool. It was then that she came across EpicData, a local long-standing Qlik partner, and an exciting opportunity to build her Qlik experience through a more complex project during an internship.

RESULTS
Demonstrating the capabilities and possibilities
Teklay’s project based on the water supply in Catalonia demonstrated her ability to use Qlik to build dashboards and generate insights from multiple data sources. She took open-source data generated by the Catalan Water Agency and Kaggle datasets, enhanced them with meteorological data and even integrated predictive features with Qlik AutoML.
The project also led to a job offer as a data consultant at EpicData. Teklay is now looking forward to working on diverse projects, staying at the forefront of new technologies and delivering solutions that enable smarter decisions.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
An opportunity to encourage and inspire
Thomas More University’s decision to work with the Qlik Academic Program was based primarily on Qlik’s ease of use and integrated capabilities. By providing a comprehensive and intuitive platform, the university can encourage and inspire students to look deeper into data and analytics.
This practical, collaborative approach is enhanced by working with industry partners such as EpicData. The result is a learning program that is rich in opportunities for students who understand the value of data in a dynamic working environment.

It didn’t take long to get up to speed and start working on my project, especially with the help of the Qlik Academic Program and the wider Qlik community.
