Hapag-Lloyd Uses Qlik to Drive Efficiency Gains Up to 50%

Global shipping leader turns billions of IoT data points into proactive, real-time operations

Hamburg, GermanyQlik®, a global leader in data integration, data quality, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI), today announced that Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading container shipping companies, is using Qlik Analytics® to transform billions of rows of IoT data into actionable insights through its groundbreaking Smart Container initiative.

Operating for nearly 180 years, Hapag-Lloyd operates a global fleet of 305 vessels, transports 12.5 million TEUs annually, and employs approximately 17,400 people across more than 400 offices in 140 countries.

For more than a decade, Hapag-Lloyd has relied on Qlik to drive operational transparency and data-driven decision-making across its complex global operations. At the heart of this transformation is Hapag-Lloyd’s Smart Container project, which equips its entire fleet of more than two million containers with permanently installed IoT devices. These devices track container locations and operational metrics, delivering unprecedented real-time and historical visibility into shipment progress, including journey segments not directly controlled by the company.

“The Smart Container project was a jump into cold water, as no other shipping company has anything like it,” shared Christian Klinge, Head of BI Development, Hapag-Lloyd. “But with Qlik as the main front-end data transformation and visualization tool, we knew we could deliver on it.”

Without the ability to structure, visualize, and contextualize the billions of rows of unstructured IoT data from its Smart Containers, Hapag-Lloyd was unable to leverage that data to drive fast, confident decisions across the business. Historically, the company relied on third parties to provide updates on container locations, an approach that often resulted in incomplete or delayed information.

Qlik Analytics now serves as the core analytics and visualization platform, enabling around 7,000 Hapag-Lloyd employees, from senior leadership to front-line operational staff, to explore data, add business context, and act on insights in real time. The improved transparency supports both real-time decision-making and retrospective analysis, helping Hapag-Lloyd optimize operations, reduce costs, and improve sustainability. The improvement in planning, enabled by the Smart Container project, has the potential to reduce individual inland container transport journeys by up to 50%.

“Hapag-Lloyd’s Smart Container initiative is a powerful example of how organizations can turn massive, complex IoT datasets into real business value,” said Gareth Vincent, Senior Vice President of Sales, EMEA at Qlik. “By putting trusted, real-time insights into the hands of users across the business, Qlik is helping Hapag-Lloyd improve transparency, optimize operations, and deliver better outcomes for customers and the environment.”
