Analyzing the Social Buzz at #HIMSS18

Last year at HIMSS (the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society annual conference), we launched a Social Awareness app (found at www.tweetathon.org) for the wonderful non-profit Momcology.

Momcology is a non-profit support organization that connects primary caregivers of children with cancer for peer support and information sharing. They provide real-time connections via peer moderated social networking groups where caregivers can find each other in a safe, secure and responsible environments to discuss protocols, side effects, treatment outcomes, and personal experiences. Building on that app for Momcology, we started to track some major health conferences and popular hashtags such as #PopHealth, #HCLDR, #HIT100, and one of our favorite communities/tribes: #Pinksocks.

Using the app and tracking the Twitterverse prior to HIMSS18 in Las Vegas, we had a good idea of what was in store, but would those buzzwords and topics hold strong throughout the show? What innovations would steal the spotlight? Which education sessions would generate the most buzz?

Including the week before, including, and after HIMSS, we collected data on over 60K tweets from almost 19K people (and a slew of vendors):

Monitoring the app leading up to and throughout HIMSS provided many insights into the popular topics and innovations of the week in Vegas. What did you find most exciting and innovative?

Perhaps you see the utility now of monitoring an event or the tweets of a community. Within healthcare, think of the low percentage of patients that fill out surveys… But I bet they'll share something on Twitter or Facebook about their bad experiences at your hospitals or with a particular doctor. Your patients are sharing their voices - are you listening and incorporating this social commentary data into your analysis of patient experience?
