CHALLENGE

A theoretical approach to data

Data has always played a pivotal role in the retail sector, and data management is increasingly important both online and offline. DHBW Mannheim began offering its Digital Commerce Management course to Business Administration and Retail students in 2020, precisely to cater to this development. The university’s teaching on data analysis topics such as database management, the basics of data optimization and modules such as business and market intelligence, was previously overwhelmingly theoretical.

APPROACH

A move toward practical teaching

To give students the chance to get as much hands-on experience with data as possible, DHBW Mannheim joined the Qlik Academic Program. As part of the program, Qlik provides its Qlik Sense® data analysis platform – including training and qualifications – to educators and students free of charge, with the aim of preparing them for the digital world of work. Qlik Sense is used in the integration seminar to encourage participants to apply theoretical knowledge, perform their own research and collate and analyze their own data.

RESULTS

A straightforward approach to working with data

Working with data on a deeper level through the Qlik Academic Program has lowered the barrier to entry for students to work with, collate, integrate, link and draw conclusions from data. It has given them a straightforward approach to the topic, which means that quantitative processes and data analysis are now becoming part of their bachelor’s theses. Going forward, the Qlik Academic Program will be integrated into other data-related classes to open up new crossover opportunities between career fields.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Expanded skillsets for the job market

Being able to use Qlik Sense for free – and having access to well-structured and clear training documents – gives the students an in-depth, self-guided introduction into the field of data management. They can work independently on a research project, learn how to process data, build data models and visualize them clearly. Students can now learn the wide-ranging ways in which data can be used and better recognize how it can be deployed within a company, boosting their chances in the job market.
