Making Qonnections in Health – Five Things I Learned

Recapping five takeaways that every healthcare organization can benefit from.

A few weeks ago saw the biggest event on the Qlik calendar: Qonnections 2016 took place in Orlando, Florida with more than 3,000 attendees. I was delighted to welcome almost 200 customers from the healthcare industry along with many Qlik partners who support and deliver specialist solutions in health.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to share and see the impact Qlik is having with healthcare providers who presented more than 15 breakout sessions specifically dedicated to health transformation.

The health track started with stories of success from around the world including a presentation from Angelika Klidas, health analytics evangelist from the Netherlands. Angelika talked about their work to track the patient journey within the primary care health system. This included demonstrations of apps with unique visualizations aimed at delivering insights for decision makers to improve patient experience and outcomes.

The following three days were filled with fantastic presentations from health customers and partners showcasing the impact of Qlik in their organizations. Topics ranged from clinical coding to global research into tuberculosis and system wide analytics strategies. I could fill an entire book with the lessons learned and successes presented, but in the interests of a blog post, I will keep it to my top 5!

What did we learn about #healthcare #analytics from #Qonnections? We list our Top 5 here:

  1. The wider the engagement, the greater the impact. This might seem obvious, but there was a consistent theme from many health professionals regarding the link between engagement and project success. Health analytics programs delivering in silos can only go so far; the real magic happens when analytics is used to navigate information silos across the enterprise.
  2. Accurate clinical coding and documentation in the US is worth millions of dollars per hospital! One of the speakers explained how they had used Qlik to support clinical documentation accuracy with a huge impact on revenue. One example was documenting peritonitis – described in the notes without using the actual word yielded a fraction of the payment compared to an accurate recording.
  3. During your request/intake process, score your applications based on alignment to strategic goals, lives touched, and integration in workflows to deliver better adoption and success.
  4. People need better access not just to answers – they need better access to ask questions. Even without the data, they will make decisions, so equip them with the tools to ask questions. One speaker also made the point that expectation management is key. Let the executives set the priority of the apps in the queue and make that queue visible to everyone!
  5. Finally, a recurring theme was to adopt an agile, iterative approach in releasing content. Many speakers commented that people are making decisions today, with or without the data. Get version 1 of the app out there and build upon it!
