Qualcomm engineers build BI applications 99% faster with Qlik

As a leader in developing innovative wireless communications solutions, Qualcomm relies on multiple enterprise applications to run a smooth operation.

Understanding the way these apps are used is crucial — not only to keep things running efficiently, but also to identify ways in which processes can be streamlined and optimized.

Despite having numerous BI systems already available, Qualcomm found that in addition to dealing with an often frustrating and inefficient process, the time and resources needed to create data warehouses, develop semantic layers and run ad hoc reports left their data inaccessible.

Choosing visual analysis and rapid deployment

Looking to address these reporting and analysis challenges, Qualcomm’s Senior Programmer Analyst Steve Rimar turned to QlikView.

“I was impressed by both the visual analysis and the solution’s ability to rapidly deploy new applications — an ideal combination for our needs.” Rimar said.

Using QlikView, Qualcomm was able to build a Product Lifecycle Management application in only a couple of days. This app provides instant access to analysis on employee system usage — including peak times, system performance and average product turnaround time.

As Rimar said, “We were astonished at the speed of deployment. If we had attempted to build the same application with Qualcomm’s existing BI solution it would have taken weeks — or even months.”

The app could also help identify potential bottlenecks, allowing the IT team to make necessary updates while avoiding any loss of productivity.

Reaping the rewards of a streamlined process

Having seen the success of its initial application, Qualcomm was quick to deploy QlikView more widely across the rest of operations. Over 100 dashboards and reporting operations have been deployed across 15 business units. All have had a significant impact in helping to streamline the analysis and reporting process.

Take the ASIC System Test group, as an example. Using QlikView has increased efficiencies in the chip testing lifecycle — saving a day each month. Ultimately, by improving throughput time, Qualcomm has created a more a productive workforce. Additionally, QlikView’s real-time analysis makes planning far more flexible, so staffing levels can be appropriately adjusted to match new initiatives and unplanned events — ensuring that Qualcomm can meet its commitments to suppliers.

QlikView has also enabled Qualcomm’s engineers to access the data necessary to improve the quality control processes. Quality technicians were previously forced to spend at least four hours per week on the frustrating and time-consuming task of preparing exhaustive reports for eight different Qualcomm product families. These reports are now completely automated, saving the staff up to 20 hours per month.

“We’ve had amazing feedback from technicians since implementing this technology. With the time saved they can now analyze the results themselves, helping them to respond to any issues that are lengthening the quality control process,” Rimar said.

“We can’t underestimate the impact QlikView has had on our operations. By streamlining our reporting processes we’re able to use employee time more effectively – improving operations across the whole organization,” Rimar concluded.
