SQL SERVER CHANGE DATA CAPTURE

Provided with certain editions of Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Change Data Capture is a technology used for tracking DML changes on a SQL Server database. When change data capture is enabled on the database and specific tables you want to track, SQL Server CDC captures data changes from your database transaction logs, recording the changed data with additional metadata in change tables on the source database. This data can then be consumed by SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or another type of ETL application and then processed and loaded into another database, data warehouse, or data mart.

Key Capabilities of Microsoft SQL Server Change Data Capture

SQL Server Change Data Capture is an extremely convenient tool for developers as it allows them to track insert, update, and delete activity on a SQL Server database without having to write their own tracking mechanism, make changes to source table schemas, or use invasive triggers. For SQL Server users, SQL Server Change Data Capture is an efficient method of SQL Server data replication that facilitates real-time data integration across the organization—eliminating the need for bulk load updates and accelerating data warehousing projects.

Users of Microsoft's native SQL Server Change Data Capture have several considerations to keep in mind. In contrast to SQL Server replication, tables containing changed data and associated metadata cannot be offloaded to another server, and accommodating schema changes in source tables is a challenge. SQL Server Change Data Capture also does not include a transport mechanism, meaning that you'll need to develop your own polling mechanism to deliver changes to an ETL tool or other application.

A User-Friendly Complement to SQL Server Change Data Capture: Qlik Replicate (formerly Attunity Replicate)

Qlik Replicate (formerly Attunity Replicate) is an innovative data replication and data ingestion solution that leverages Qlik (Attunity) unique change data capture technology and automates SQL replication tasks—including schema and DDL replication. With Qlik Replicate (formerly Attunity Replicate), implementing SQL database replication, real-time data warehousing, and other data integration jobs is simple, universal and real-time.

Our intuitive graphical interface automates the process of replicating, consolidating, distributing, and ingesting data efficiently across a wide range of source and target platforms without having to write scripts or learn new DBA skills.

With Qlik Replicate (formerly Attunity Replicate) zero-footprint architecture, there's no requirement to install agents on source or target systems. And our non-intrusive CDC technology minimizes impact on your source database by using transaction logs or database journals to capture data changes. Set-up is remarkably simple. Within minutes, you can be moving large volumes of data changes from your SQL Server, Oracle, and other types of databases to any major database, data warehouse, Hadoop or legacy target, on premises or in the cloud.
