The Evolution of Built-In Oracle Change Data Capture Technology

For those unfamiliar with Oracle change data capture, we should first explain "what is change data capture?". In the context of Oracle Database, change data capture has come to refer to a built-in technology that was first introduced with the release of Oracle 9i and used to track and record changes applied to user tables in a database. These changes are stored in change tables for consumption by ETL applications, which can then process the data for loading into other databases or data warehouses. Because this first version of Oracle change data capture worked by creating triggers on source tables, many DBAs considered it to be an invasive approach and were reluctant to use it.

With the release of Oracle 10g, a new, less-intrusive method of Oracle change data capture was introduced. This new form of Oracle CDC leveraged the source database's redo logs as well as the built-in Oracle replication tool Oracle Streams to detect and transport change data to a target data repository—without negatively impacting the source system's performance. With the release of Oracle 12c, however, built-in Oracle change data capture is no longer supported (and Oracle Streams is discontinued), leaving Oracle users to pay for Oracle GoldenGate or find an alternative Oracle replication and change data capture solution.
